The area we live in has very few snakes. The only snakes we usually see are little garter snakes.
The other day my husband came home from work and said "You've got to see what we have out here!" This snake was sitting on our front walk, right by the garage.
He was a big one - about 2 feet long and when we came near, he flattened his head like a cobra and hissed at us. Bob knew what type it was, and that it wasn't poisonous, so we weren't scared. However, I didn't care for it next to the house, so he took brought it over to the woods.
It's an Eastern Hognose Snake, also known as a Puff Adder.

I'm sure I'll not be photographing any snakes, but you sure got a great pic of that one, Mari!
Oh, you are so brave to get so close - even if it's not poisonous!! Great shot, however, especially with its tongue visible!
I grew up with rattle snakes, so any sign of any snake and I go running! yuck!!!
My first thought, the way it's coiled, was that it was rattlesnake. So glad it wasn't, because in order to get a picture like this, it would only be safe with a big zoom lens! Great picture. Hope I never get the opportunity!
Oh you brave gal. I don't like snakes either...
ok, so i sure hope you were using a zoom lens here...if not, you are crazy!! haha. that is one ugly snake, but a great photo. i hate snakes, more than anything probably.
Oh Mari, this pic makes my skin crawl with fear! Please tell me you were using a zoom lens....EEK! You really got a fantastic shot!
I know someone that would LOVE to see this picture. Not only that, he would like to live up there so he could catch one. Please don't invite him. We are DONE with snakes!
Whoa! I honestly thought you were going to say it was a Massasauga Rattlesnake. That's the only poisonous snake we have around these parts and they are actually going extinct. Very rare, though often seen on the nature trails at the nature center in Kazoo, I hear. So, it didn't have a little rattle on the end of the tail? Hmm.
I'm often nervous that I will find something like this when I lift the pool skimmer lid off to clean the filter basket inside. Yesterday there was a dead mole in there and yes, I screamed.
Nice shot of this snake, by the way.
Yikes! I wouldn't want to find that near my home! Looks pretty frightening. I love the colors and patterns though. Great shot you managed to get!
I love all your pictures...well except for this one! I don't even like pictures of snakes and I'm hoping you used a major zoom lens to get such a good picture.
Oh yuck - I hate snakes!
I'm part of the rattlesnake crowd even though where I live now just has garter snakes.

He looks like satan himself, doesn't he? Good picture though.
uuuuuh .... I'm really happy that we don't have any snakes like that here!! Poisonous or not it's not my favorite animal.
