July 27

My husband loves woodworking and has collected some old tools. This is part of his collection of old planes. They were were used to shave rough edges down. Planes are still used today, but the new ones are metal. I like to see these old tools and imagine the hands that used them and what they were used to make.

My father was a carpenter long before power tools. He used a hand plane frequently. We kids loved to play with the curls of wood the plane produced. My oldest brother tells the tale that my father could hand-saw two pieces of wood and fit them together so well one could hardly tell where they met as the seam was hard to discern. Personally, I would think these wooden hand planes would be easier to handle than one of metal.
